Social Isolation and New Technology: How the Internet and mobile phones impact Americans' social networks

This study reports on the Pew Internet Personal Networks and Community survey, conducted through July and August 2008. Key findings offer challenges to previous research and common fears about potential harmful impacts of new technologies, such as concern that technology pulls people away from social engagement. The survey debunks this notion, revealing that involvement and use of social networking services generally enlarge one's social network, increasing engagement and cultural diversity.
