Dec 20, 2011Call for ParticipationInTeGrate (http://serc.carleton.edu/integrate/index.html) is a 5 year, community effort to improve geoscience literacy and build a workforce that is prepared to tackle environmental and resource challenges. The project includes many opportunities for participation and collaboration for geoscientists as well as those from natural science, social science and the humanities. There are several current opportunities to join the project Including suggesting module topics (and recommending authors), applying for the assessment team, and participating in one of four upcoming workshops.
Suggest a Module Topic
One focus of the InTeGrate project will be to develop a new introductory course that emphasizes the potential of the geosciences to address societal challenges. To build this course, we are encouraging faculty to submit ideas for the creation of new introductory-level modules. We seek ideas for modules that will use one or more concepts within the geosciences to address a societal issue, will identify connections between at least two components of the earth system and will develop geoscience literacy.
Modules should support teaching for approximately one to two weeks of class and lab time and be adaptable for a variety of class sizes, departments and institutions.
Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis over a two year period. Go to http://serc.carleton.edu/integrate/module_topics.html to apply.Join the Assessment TeamAssessment is an important part of the InTeGrate effort to create new teaching materials and implement them in the undergraduate curriculum. We are seeking faculty and evaluation specialists to join us in the assessment of new curriculum materials and courses.
The assessment team will design the assessment program, develop needed instruments or tools, support the development and implementation teams and evaluate the curriculum materials. The team will also focus on measuring the impact of materials on student learning. They will guide the development teams in embedding assessments that will allow monitoring of students' progress toward learning goals suitable for the project.
Team members will receive a stipend of $5000 per year, which reflects a commitment to 1 month of effort. All travel expenses will be covered by the project grant. We anticipate team members will serve for 3-5 years.
Please consider joining us in this important work. Go to http://serc.carleton.edu/integrate/assessment_team.html for the application or contact David Steer (330-972-2099 or steer@uakron.edu).Workshops for 2012
The InTeGrate program is offering 3 new workshops for 2012, plus one partnership workshop in collaboration with On the Cutting Edge. Workshop descriptions and applications are available online. Visit http://serc.carleton.edu/integrate/workshops/index.html for more details.

Preventing Cyberbullying: Connecting Students, Teachers, and Parents in Digital Citizenship
Join us for a Webinar on October 26
Space is limited.
Reserve your Webinar seat now at:
https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/398395618As kids and schools become more digitally connected, bullying is manifesting itself in ways beyond the playground. Cyberbullying is a significant issue kids can face, causing hurt and harm to school communities. Being bullied can affect kids' performance in school, relationships, and family life. Schools can take a preventative approach by stopping bullying before it starts. Dive into Common Sense Media’s free K-12 education resources that help students learn to be safe and responsible digital citizens. You'll be introduced to our cyberbullying toolkit for middle school educators, which offers key lesson plans, engaging videos, a parent outreach kit, and resource links for administrators and kids. You'll learn what students should do if they are the target of cyberbullying, as well as ways to get students to move from being "bystanders" to being "upstanders" when they witness cyberbullying. And, we'll share resources that will help you build a whole-community approach around ethics and safety with students, teachers, and parents. You'll leave with ideas and tools you can implement immediately in your school.
Presenter: Kelly Mendoza, Common Sense Media
Kelly Mendoza manages professional development for Common Sense Media’s educational programs. She presents trainings and workshops to educators, parents, and students on digital citizenship and media issues. Aug 16, 2011Call for ParticipationThe National Science Digital Library (NSDL) Biological Sciences Pathway, BiosciEdNet (BEN), invites undergraduate faculty in the biological sciences to apply to become BEN Scholars. The BEN Scholars Program is one of the grassroots outreach activities of the BEN Collaborative of more than 20 life sciences professional societies. The goal of the BEN Scholars Program is to promote the use of digital library resources and student-centered teaching and learning methods in higher education, specifically in biological sciences lecture and laboratory courses, and in research training programs. The BEN Scholars program works both directly with faculty who are BEN Scholars and indirectly, through outreach activities led by BEN Scholars. Outreach activities are aimed at biological sciences faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and middle and high school teachers. Activities are carried out on campus with departments, locally throughout the region, and nationally through professional societies.Using digital libraries, BEN Scholars learn how to transform lectures and laboratories to be more student-centered and to integrate career exploration and up-to-date science content across fields into existing curricula. BEN Scholars receive professional development in:1) Using and submitting resources to digital libraries;2) Implementing best practices in teaching and learning;3) integrating digital resources into courses and measuring their impact on student learning;4) Leading digital library outreach activities with colleagues through presentations, workshops, and one-on-one mentoring;5) Networking with other BEN Scholars for a minimum 18 month period.BEN Scholars will receive recognition from the participating organizations, travel support, and a small stipend for completion of all fellowship activities ($1,000 total). Half of the stipend ($500) is paid for completion of all Institute and online professional development activities.
