Notes - NSDL Update
Lee Zia
Definitions
- definition of cyberinfrastructure
- definition of cyberinfrastructure + education =
- email definitions to Lee Zia
subject: education + cyberinfrastructure
NSF is excited about cyberinfrastructure - see the Atkins Report on the NSF website for more information
- budget doubling resolution for cyberinfrastructure
- but Congress will not take further substantive action until they get a clear handle on cyberinfrastructure - so clearly NSDL has a role to play in education and cyberinfrastructure as well as other areas of cyberinfrastructure
NSDL will help its own case if able to put faces of reality to that vision
- broad goals of NSDL, broad target audience of pre-K to gray - that has not changed
Middle School Focus
- there may be hidden connections, what you're doing may have hidden considerations even if currently not prominently featured
- my perspectives - full disclosure - I have 2 middle school children
- cogent reasons for such a focus - well documented how critical these years are for students
- numerous projects underway and some just funded that have the MS focus - surveilling larger NSDL projects, I sense a synergy, connection, of all the projects
- these students are members of that next generation Gregory Crane described
- look for connections in the focus area as you move through the day
- think carefully about how you can be involved
one of my favorite quotes - from Bertram Russell - wouldn't it be neat if you could read a message for the author or other readers
- all exact science is dominated by the idea of approximation
Dave Fulker - CI Report & Plans
complex effort by many people
encourage you to use WBR to communicate
there is great opportunity to start participating in SC work if you haven't already done so
diversity of resources in foundations of library
more than content - picking up on NSDL learning environments
CI will target multiple audiences in phases
- Fulker has drafted a version of this plan - please pick it up and send Dave your feedback
- first context selected is middle school - with input from NVC, PC, and Lee Zia - plan to engage MS audience in 2 forms
- broad showing of NSDL to interested MS parties - teachers, administrators
- direct involvement of perhaps six pilot schools in design experiments
- 2004 focus - middle school science and math
- next phase likely to be undergraduate or high school
we are envisioning some version of user-centered design - so people can have sense of participating in NSDL, not just as groups, but as individuals with interests
experimental components will be a part - for example, NSDL presence that goes beyond the idea of NSDL as just a website
NSDL Presence as a Browser Extension
- NSDL browser extension
- Google annotated page
presence of NSDL on people's desktop does not have to be a web page
CI finds presence is worthy of experimentation
Tom Reeves talk of "Alignment is essential" is a good plan for setting directions of NSDL as an end-to-end functionality
if we do that, the MS portal is just a start
Impacts
- NSDL hopes to eventually serve all audiences
- working with other groups is the best way to implement this plan
- CI will not be expanding NSDL.org to include personalization functionality
- our work on automated ingest will be completed soon, and we will rely on collections to verify validity of metadata
- discussion tonight at 7:30pm in New York room to discuss plans for MS focus
Susan Jesuroga (Project Relations) - Directions for focus of projects in MS focus
regardless of MS focus, we want collections that serve the broader audience with collections and services
infrastructure exists, we will continue to ingest collections, especially for collections that fill a gap
think broadly of how your materials can be used
- teaching the teacher with undergraduate materials will be a key for out-of-area teachers
- teacher preparation materials
working a couple directions for review processes
- need help identifying collections
- others that have relations with MS area
- teacher societies
- contact John Saylor if you have ideas
- we need help from NSDL members
- need processes to take user contributions, an important part of involving the MS teachers
need to find ways to represent national and state standards because we know they are important
all of the infrastructure will stay in place and will be accessible through NSDL.org
whatever extensions we're making, don't pen CI into a corner, we hope to use them to help all audiences and collections serving them
how do we put items into teachers' hands?
- let's get creative for how we put the NSDL information into teacher and student lives
- there is power in networking together all the information contained in distributed projects' annotation frameworks
- information from many different sources provides valuable information for educator looking for help
- we need to understand about the user and the contexts they are teaching in but also how they are using resources
- users want to know who the information is coming from
- tackling the educational problem, documenting the use of the educational and digital libraries is key - Educational Impact and Evaluation Committee will be working on this
how can you (NSDL members) be involved?
- projects who see direct tie in should step up and say what they see and how they can work with CI to integrate that
- need encouragement and outside ovservation from other projects who can see if NSDL is narrowing itself too much
- pulling information together - Content Standing Committee will be focusing on this area
- research of teacher preparation and demographics - Community Services Standing Committee focus
- technical underpinnings needed for the portal - focus of Technology Standing Committee
- any collections who have worked in classroom, NSDL needs the information you have obtained
as a group, NSDL should figure out how to capture and disseminate the targeted research of NSDL, not just TR projects, but also the research underpinnings of everyone's work
Susan Van Gundy - Education and Outreach Update
EO Update TUES.ppt
a lot of interest exists out there for NSDL - at conferences, people readily jump to envisioning potential after DLs and NSDL is explained
current and potential supporters
E&O has focused on increasing audience awareness

- NSDL Ambassadors - need to interrelate CI's with the projects'
- AskNSDL
- Of Interest - part of NSDL.org that will showcase what is happening
- Work with Standing Committees
- Annual Meeting - 2004 planning meeting will occur after last session on Wednesday

- collaborative effort
- design for users - where to find information, dynamic content, responsive to showcasing information
- consistent look and feel
- also a tool for developers
- help supporters understand better what NSDL is
Site Changes
- rotating images on home page - thanks to NSDL projects who have sent images to include in this section
- highlighting items of interest on home page
- used Scout Portal Toolkit to aid dynamic information
- new tab structure
- RoI are staff picks
- Labview can showcase work in progress that is not ready to be released but is interesting

- what's in the library with respect to certain subjects, audiences, resource types
- difficult to develop priorities if we can't say what's already in the library
How well are distributed library building and governance processes working?
- Sarah Giersch and Casey Jones
- first NSDL Annual Principal Investigator Survey
- designed to get feedback from projects in 4 areas

looking at models for helping projects go forward
asking what projects need
also looking at sustainability at level of NSDL itself
- taskforces and workshops have looked at NSDL after it graduates from being an NSF program
large part of effort comes from community itself
workshops have had supplemental funding from UNC, Williams and NSF
look at Sustainability committee website for more information

survey was looking at what projects were doing regarding sustainability
upcoming workshop
- looking at business models NSDL could consider going forward
- not drilling down to a specific plan
- look at 6 different models in terms of feasability options
- what are products, services
- who is willing to pay for it
