Answer

Hello Tamara,

There's a short description of silver mining on the GoldAndSilverMines.com site, at <A href=http://www.goldandsilvermines.com/abtsilver.htm">http://www.goldandsilvermines.com/abtsilver.htm. It's not an academic source, but it gets the main points across of 1) different places where silver is found (usually with other metals), 2) how it is mined, 3) how it's refined, and 4) main uses of silver (one of the biggest is photography!)

I hope that helps answer your question -- a lot of U.S. and South American history was shaped by silver mining, so it's interesting to know about.

Best regards,
 Shelly

-----
Shelly Sommer
Information Center
Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research
University of Colorado - Boulder http://www.goldandsilvermines.com/abtsilver.htm http://vrd.askvrd.org/services/answerschema.xml
