Title: I want to start some seeds indoors so I will have plants to put in my garden in the spring. Where can I find information about how to do it?

Information: Winter is a perfect time to start thinking about creating a spring garden, especially if you want to grow your own plants from seeds and transplant them into the ground later. Keep in mind that light, temperature, moisture and planting medium will affect how a particular type of seed germinates, or sprouts. Where you live - your climate and the soil in your region - should influence what type of plants you decide to grow. There are many useful resources on the Web that will help you in your project. Check out the Smithsonian Institution's "Seeds of Change Garden" exhibit. You can explore activities to do in each of the seasons of the year: fall, winter, spring and summer. You can find information on ordering seeds here, too. http://www.mnh.si.edu/garden/seasons/ I also searched Yahooligans! Go to www.yahooligans.com and type the word "seed" in the search box. Here are a few results that may help you choose which seeds you want to grow. Weekend Gardener: Official Seed Starting Guide-Whether you want to grow flowers, vegetables or herbs, you can get detailed information about sowing different types of seeds here. http://www.chestnut-sw.com/seedhp.htm My First Garden-The University of Illinois Extension Center designed this website for beginners. It lets you explore gardening basics and how to plan your garden. http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/firstgarden/ Another way to find basic information on gardening and starting seeds indoors is to use the Open Directory project athttp://www.dmoz.org. Click on "Kids and Teens," then "Sports and Hobbies," and, finally, "Gardening." Here are a few good sites that I investigated. Kids Valley Web Gardening - This site is a wonderful resource on planning and planting once you get your seeds started.http://www.raw-connections.com/garden/ NationalGardening.org - Click on "Frequently Asked Questions" in the left hand column and then type "starting seeds indoors" in the search box. Browse through the list to find questions that interest you.http://www.garden.org/ Good luck with your seeds and your spring garden. Check with your local, public library or school librarian for more information. Another good resource is your county extension office. Thanks for your question and have a nice day! The AskNSDL Staff
