Careers in Technology

Question

1.) What is your major field of expertise and how did you become interested in it? 2.) What suggestions do you have for students who wish to become involved in your field of study?

Answer

My major field of expertise is in the development Information Technology Applications, meaning I specialize in consulting with clients of the firm that I work for and turning their business needs into information technology systems that bring value to their organization. An example might be: An insurance company has the need to process claims faster. Shortening the time between when the insured has the accident and when the claim is paid limits liability and increases customer satisfaction. We will analyze that "requirement" and determine if there is a feasible IT solution and implement it. An example of an IT solution we may implement is providing claims adjusters with wireless hand held devices that allow submission/payment/closure of the insurance claims at the time he performs a site inspection of the damage. As for how I became interested in this field of study. As a young student I was always interested in Patterns and math and I excelled and enjoyed that type of study. I worked with my Guidance counselors at school to understand what jobs took advantage of those disciplines and found Computer technology to be one of those careers. My suggestions for students in this field of study, Computer Technology, is to gain technical expertise, which is a given in this field of study, but also pursue Business knowledge (A business minor in college) as this is where the field of IT is moving and the highest opportunity exists, providing business value and not just creating an application because it can be created.
