Question

Do you have any PowerPoint slides you can share with me, or a link? I need images of (taken at surgery, during an open, and also laparoscopic, surgery): --A normal pelvis (uterus, tubes, ovaries) --Fibroid tumors (different locations in the uterus; the bulging, etc.) --Tubal pathology (hydrosalpinx, ectopic pregnancy, etc.) --Endometriosis --PID/peritonitis in the abdomen --Vagina/Cervix: normal; vaginitis; cervical polyps; If you can help me (as I prepare for some lectures), I'd appreciate it greatly. I thank you in advance for your consideration and reply. (patron is an MD)

Answer

Dear Dr. McCloud:

Thank you for submitting your question to AskNSDL regarding images of surgery of the female reproductive tract and gastrointestinal system.

I've provided a few links to websites that have image resources that may be useful to you.

HEAL (Health Education Assets Library), <A href=http://www.healcentral.org/index.jsp">http://www.healcentral.org/index.jsp, provides open access to many images. There are some photographs, but most are diagrams, animation or radiology images. If these interest you, please take a look at this site, which is very easy to search. Registration is free, and I found that there was no charge to view the images. As far as actual photographs, I found some contributed by pathology departments so I'm not sure if that will help, but here are the identification numbers of a few:

Endometriosis:
ID #169

Fibroid Uterus,
ID # 172

Peritonitis (there are many):
ID #8291

Placenta previa
ID 166

Within HEAL, I found that the Knowledge Weavers Human Reproduction Collection is especially good.
<A href=http://www.healcentral.org/healapp/searchResults?searchtype=collection&source=Knowledge+Weavers+Human+Reproduction&page=1">http://www.healcentral.org/healapp/searchResults?searchtype=collection&source=Knowledge+Weavers+Human+Reproduction&page=1

I also used Google's "Image" search, <A href=http://www.google.com/imghp?hl=en&tab=wi&q">http://www.google.com/imghp?hl=en&tab=wi&q= .

For example, I searched on these terms: surgery uterus. I've just picked a few and have listed them below.

Sydney Women's Endosurgery Centre, <A href=http://www.swec.com.au">http://www.swec.com.au, has many Patient Information resources that show photographs of laparoscopic surgcical procedures. You can click on the "Patient Information" tab at the top or click on the links below. Usually, you have to scroll to the bottom of the page for images. Hold your cursor over the image for its description.

Endometriosis, <A href=http://www.swec.com.au/endom.htm">http://www.swec.com.au/endom.htm
Hysterectomy, <A href=http://www.swec.com.au/hyster.htm">http://www.swec.com.au/hyster.htm
Infertility surgery, <A href=http://www.swec.com.au/infertil.htm">http://www.swec.com.au/infertil.htm
Ovarian surgery, <A href=http://www.swec.com.au/ovar.htm">http://www.swec.com.au/ovar.htm
Pelvic floor surgery, <A href=http://www.swec.com.au/pelvic.htm">http://www.swec.com.au/pelvic.htm

Also, check the Laparoscopic Gynecologic Surgery and Urogynecology Section, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Olson Center for Women's Health. This webpage has multiple images of a normal uterus, removal through laparoscopic surgery and removal of endometriosis lesions through laparoscopic surgery. Hold your mouse on the picture and right click. Then select "Save as" or "Copy" and you can put these images in your own power point slides.
<A href=http://www.unmc.edu/olson/clinical/lapgyn.htm">http://www.unmc.edu/olson/clinical/lapgyn.htm

I hope these resources will help. Please reply if they are not the kinds of photographs you need. I'll be happy to look for more.

Sincerely,
Joyce W.

<A href=">http://www.drmccloud.com/">

Images
Surgery
Female reproductive system
http://vrd.askvrd.org/services/answerschema.xml
