Question

1.) What is your major field of expertise and how did you become interested in it? 2.) What suggestions do you have for students who wish to become involved in your field of study?

Answer

Hi Peter: I am a research mathematician, who likes to play with math ideas. Math became my favorite subject in the second grade, when I understood that two different methods for solving the problem 42-19 = ? are equivalent. Suggestion: Explain your answer to: which number is less, 7 or 5. Look at a square piece of paper [all sides have the same length]. How many ways can you divide that piece of paper into two equal parts; four equal parts ? Draw them. Let me know how you do.
