Question

What do dreams come from, why do they exist?

Answer

Hi there,

That's a very good question, and one that is of interest to many people since we all experience dreaming in our sleep!

I did some Google searches for you on the Internet, using the terms "dreams" and "sleep" and came up with a few good websites that might help answer your question.

First, since dreams occur during sleep, I think it would be helpful for you to understand human sleeping patterns and why we need sleep. You can find the answers on a great website called "Neuroscience for Kids" that is maintained by a professor at the University of Washington. Check it out at: <A href=http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/sleep.html" target=_BLANK>http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/sleep.html

Another good website is dreamresearch.net, which has an informative set of Frequently Asked Questions. Here is the link to that website (which is maintained by two individuals at the University of California, Santa Cruz ): <A href=http://psych.ucsc.edu/dreams/FAQ/index.html" target=_BLANK>http://psych.ucsc.edu/dreams/FAQ/index.html

Finally, the National Sleep Foundation -- an organization that supports research for people with sleep disorders -- has some information about dreams on its website: <A href=http://www.sleepfoundation.org/features/dreams.cfm" target=_BLANK>http://www.sleepfoundation.org/features/dreams.cfm

At the bottom of that web page, you will find a list of books that may assist you in further researching your question -- you can look for them in your local library, and be sure to ask a librarian for help!

Good luck,
Jill F.

http://vrd.askvrd.org/services/answerschema.xml
