Question

I would like to know what is on the surface of a blaster ball toy. Blaster balls come in sets of two. You can get them at Dollar Tree stores in the toy section. You clack them together and they make a loud popping sound. My mom says they smell like a match, but they don't ignite. Joshua

Answer

I am not familiar with the toy, but I searched on the Internet and found one relevant link that calls them fireworks. In July 2005, they were recalled because the spark can a fire.

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), BJ Alan Co., of Youngstown, Ohio, is voluntarily recalling about 6,600 Blaster Ball Fireworks Devices. When the blaster balls are hit together, they can produce a spark that can catch on fire, posing a risk of burn injuries to consumers.
While these toys may seem fun, they are really fireworks that can be dangerous. Fireworks contain black powder (gunpowder). Because of the recall, I urge you to not use them anymore and have your mom get rid of them.

Unfortunately, not all toys are totally safe. Sometimes the real dangers are not known until after accidents happen.
http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml05/05587.html http://vrd.askvrd.org/services/answerschema.xml
