Question

I need facts about the Exxon Valdez and other major oil spills. I am doing a science project on oil spills and was reading about the Exxon Valdez, and I was wondering if there was any thing you could tell me about the effect it has on the environment and just some fun facts??? maybe even some percentages of Alaska's employment or something like that, i am on a very tight schedule and need this as soon as possible please...

Answer

Hello,

The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Oil Program is a good place to start. It has a Learning Center web page (<A href=http://www.epa.gov/oilspill/eduhome.htm">http://www.epa.gov/oilspill/eduhome.htm) that has many facts about the environmental effects of oil spills, response and clean-up measures, and pictures. They also have a good page about the Exxon Valdez spill in particular (<A href=http://www.epa.gov/oilspill/exxon.htm">http://www.epa.gov/oilspill/exxon.htm).

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), another government agency, has a lot about the Exxon Valdez spill (<A href=http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/stories/oilymess/welcome.html">http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/stories/oilymess/welcome.html). But you can also find some very good information and statistics about other oil spills. The web page address is really long, so make sure you cut and paste all of it: (<A href=http://response.restoration.noaa.gov/topic_subtopic_entry.php?RECORD_KEY%28entry_subtopic_topic%29=entry_id,subtopic_id,topic_id&entry_id(entry_subtopic_topic)=325&subtopic_id(entry_subtopic_topic)=2&topic_id(entry_subtopic_topic)=1">http://response.restoration.noaa.gov/topic_subtopic_entry.php?RECORD_KEY%28entry_subtopic_topic%29=entry_id,subtopic_id,topic_id&entry_id(entry_subtopic_topic)=325&subtopic_id(entry_subtopic_topic)=2&topic_id(entry_subtopic_topic)=1)

Last but not least, check out the State of Alaska's Exxon Valdez Oil Spill web site (<A href=http://www.evostc.state.ak.us/">http://www.evostc.state.ak.us/). Under the habitat section, you can click on the link "Injured Resources and Services" to see the long-term effects of the spill on animals, fish, and humans. (This is a good place to find info on how the spill affected people in the area.)

Good luck on your science project -- sounds interesting!
  - Shelly
    Librarian, INSTAAR, University of Colorado-Boulder http://www.epa.gov/oilspill/eduhome.htm http://www.epa.gov/oilspill/exxon.htm http://oceanservice.noaa.gov/education/stories/oilymess/welcome.html http://response.restoration.noaa.gov/topic_subtopic_entry.php?RECORD_KEY%28entry_subtopic_topic%29=entry_id,subtopic_id,topic_id&entry_id(entry_subtopic_topic)=325&subtopic_id(entry_subtopic_topic)=2&topic_id(entry_subtopic_topic)=1 http://www.evostc.state.ak.us/ http://vrd.askvrd.org/services/answerschema.xml
