Question

1.) What is your major field of expertise and how did you become interested in it? 2.) What suggestions do you have for students who wish to become involved in your field of study?

Answer

My field of interest in the study of the polar regions, primarily studying the sea ice (frozen ocean water ) in the Arctic Ocean using satellite data and models. For students interested in this field of study, I recommend lots of math, science, and computer classes. Environmental science, physical geography, climate studies, oceanography, and atmospheric science classes are also useful. A good to obtain an interesting introduction to the polar environment is tor read books on polar exploration. I would recommend "The Endurance" by Caroline Alexander and "The Longest March" by Susan Solomon for starters, but there are many great stories.
