Title: Where can I find help with my homework in Statistics?

Information: There are many websites that offer help understanding Statistics. If you use a general Web search engine to look for - statistics "homework help" - you'll retrieve thousands of results! You could also search Internet directories, such as LII,http://lii.org, and find many good resources. In this pathfinder, I've listed a few reliable websites to try. Mathworld by Eric Weisstein - Probability and Statistics - This website makes it easy to discover information on many topics, such as distributions, tests, plots, etc. You can click on the link of interest and then follow the path to the information you need. http://mathworld.wolfram.com/topics/ProbabilityandStatistics.html Math Forum @ Drexel - The Forum organizes math resources by subject and levels: K-12 students, college and advanced. The "Dr. Math" archive has previously asked questions and answers, or you can submit your own problem. The link below will take you to the page for "Probability and Statistics." Click on the link for "Home" at the bottom of the page to go to site's main page. http://mathforum.org/probstat/probstat.html Mathematics Reference: Math Tables, Facts and Formulas - Colby Community College's Mathematics Department provides this "mathematics reference collection of 'K through 14' math tables, facts, definitions, formulas and explanations." Scroll down to the "Statistics" category for the following information: "Distributions/Mean, Median, Mode, Range, Standard Deviation and Semi-Interquartile Deviation/How to 'ACE' College Math http://colbycc.edu/www/math/ref.htm#general Figure This! Math Challenges for Families: "Math Index" - Produced by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, this website focuses on middle school mathematics and presents problems, hints to get started and complete solutions. Click on "Home" (top left corner) to get to the main page. To find challenges in "Probability and Statistics," scroll down the page. Interesting challenges include problems about "Life Expectancy," "Salaries," "Basketball picks," etc. http://www.figurethis.org/challenges/math_index.htm Rice Virtual Lab in Statistics - Rice University produces this website that includes "HyperStat Online Textbook" by David M. Lane (copyright 1993-2003) - As the title implies, you can link to each of 18 different sections of this online textbook from the Table of Contents, which is on the left hand side of the page. You can also explore simulations/demonstrations of statistical concepts, case studies and statistical analysis tools. http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~lane/rvls.html "Internet Glossary of Statistical Terms" - The glossary provides short and simple definitions and methods of doing statistical calculations, such as the mean, mode, median, Z Scores, etc. There's advertising to buy their main product, but the glossary is free. http://mathforum.org/probstat/probstat.html "Chi-Square", by Amar Patel - (from the Introduction) "The material in this lesson will enable you to be able to understand statistical terms such as expectation, significance, and chi-square." It aims to take the fear out of doing statistics. http://www.mste.uiuc.edu/patel/chisquare/intro.html "Q&A: Statistics" - From Amazing Space, the "Formal Education Group of the Space Telescope Science Institute's Office of Public Outreach." (from "About us".) This is a collection of 21 questions and answers, which can help students learn statistics. It is aimed toward students in grades 10-12, but can help anybody interested in topics, such as "confidence levels," "sampling errors," "standard deviation," etc. Teachers can also use this resource in the classroom - click on the "Overview" link at the top of the resource for ideas.) http://amazing-space.stsci.edu/resources/qa/statistics.php.p=Teaching+tools%40%2Ceds%2Ctools%2C%3EStatistics%40%2Ceds%2Ctools%2Ctopic%2Cstatistics.php%3EOverview%3A+Statistics+Q%2Aamp%2AA%40%2Ceds%2Coverviews%2Cqa%2Cstatistics.php%3EQ%2Aamp%2AA%3A+Statistics%40%2Cresources%2Cqa%2Cstatistics.php&a=%2Ceds Statistical Literacy - This website addresses "Statistical Literacy: the study of statistics used as evidence in arguments." I discovered it by browsing the Math Forum's "Numeracy" messages. (Read Milo Schield's post on 12/8/04,http://mathforum.org/epigone/numeracy/trahroydroa). http://www.statlit.org/ Educators may also be interested in the "Statistics" Resource Guide available at the Educator's Reference Desk, where you can browse lesson plans, Internet sites, Online communities and organizations. http://eduref.org/cgi-bin/print.cgi/Resources/Subjects/Mathematics/Statistics.html Hopefully, this sampling of resources will help you find answers to your statistics problems. Be sure to visit your local school and/or public library for more materials that may be available there. Good luck! Joyce W. Virtual Reference Librarian Pathfinder created 12/30/04
