Aging

Question

Why do people's skin get wrinklier as they age?

Answer

Hi Jordan, The aging process causes changes in the collagen layer of skin. These changes result in wrinkles. Environmental factors like smoking and sun can also cause these changes in collagen, resulting in premature wrinkles. I found some excellent web sites that will give you more detailed information about the cause of wrinkles. I went to www.google.com and typed wrinkles causes for my search. The following site is from the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) http://www.umm.edu/patiented/articles/what_causes_wrinkles_000021_1.htm To find out information about the environmental causes of wrinkles, check out this web site. http://www.soundmedicine.iu.edu/archive/2002/quiz/wrinkles.html The following is another site that outlines the aging process and wrinkles. Researchers identify process that starts skin aging http://www.umich.edu/~urecord/9798/Nov19_97/skin.htm Be sure and visit your school or public library. The librarians will be able to direct you to print sources on Aging and Gerontology (the study of the aged). Good luck with your research. Thank you for submitting your question to the NSDL Virtual Reference Desk. Melodye C. Librarian
