Voyage of Discovery for Middle and High School Earth Science Teachers
February 2004 -- A two-week summer workshop at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California is open to middle and high school teachers who teach Earth science. Teachers with prior experience or interest in the NSDL are encouraged to apply. Support includes a stipend for travel and living allowances. Enable your students to design their own personal voyages of discovery. We will concentrate on the ideas of plate tectonics, using real shipboard data and state-of-the-art global Earth science models. Beginning with the discovery of magnetic seafloor spreading stripes, we will explore the scientific inquiry process of hypothesis and testing. Throughout the workshop, you will be immersed in the researcher's view of the world, as you work side-by-side in daily sessions with a group of researchers and advanced graduate students. Working in a digital library context of national and state standards, scientific concepts, and a rich collection of supporting data and materials, teachers will build learning experiences for classroom use. The deadline for registration is March 1. The workshop dates are 11-24 July 2004. Department to Fund Innovative Research Training Programs in the Education Sciences
February 2004 -- The US Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences (IES) today announced a new program to fund graduate training programs in the education sciences. These programs will train a new generation of education researchers capable of producing scientific evidence to guide education policy and classroom practice. Such evidence is crucial to the implementation of the education reforms in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002, and to further the transformation of education into an evidence-based field.

Additional information is available on the IES Web page

NSDL at the American Association for the Advancement of Science Annual Meeting (AAAS)
February 2004 -- Director of Outreach and Education Susan Van Gundy and Director of Collections Development John Saylor represented the NSDL at AAAS in Seattle February 12-16 http://www.aaas.org/meetings/index.html. Saylor reports that he engaged student participants at the NSDL exhibit booth by giving them on-the-spot "science quizzes" with questions like: How many moons does Jupiter have?

References to how many moons Jupiter has were found in NSDL.org search results:
- "16": http://csep10.phys.utk.edu/astr161/lect/jovian_moons/jovian_moons.html in the first sentence on "jupiter moons" search. Do you think this is incorrect.
- "28": http://kidsastronomy.com/jupiter.htm
- "61": http://www.seds.org/nineplanets/nineplanets/jupiter.html

Students learned that analysis and evaluation of a variety of resources is a key component in the discovery of information.

BOOKMARKS

SIGN UP NOW: Contribute Your Knowledge as an AskNSDL Expert
February 2004 -- AskNSDL will be featured as the "Ask a Scientist or Engineer" service for the NSF's Excellence in Science, Technology, and Mathematics Education (ESTME) Week website (http://www.estme.org), as well as at Equations '04, the March 16 ESTME Week exposition in Washington, D.C. In preparation for this event NSDL is enhancing the AskNSDL service by growing the base of experts who answer user questions. ESTME Week is co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Education as a celebration of science and technology during the week of March 15-20. To register, go to http://asknsdl.askvrd.org and click on the "experts" tab. Contact Susan Van Gundy (303/ 497-2946 or vangundy@ucar.edu) for more information.

Communicating With Power Point
February 2004 -- "Don Norman on PowerPoint Usability: Interview with Cliff Atkinson" Sociable Media (2004) by Cliff Atkinson is a rebuttal of sorts to Edward Tufte's condemnation of PowerPoint as reported in Current Cites for August. Don Norman argues from the get-go that "PowerPoint is NOT the problem", it's the presenter. Norman cautions that the tool should be used sparingly: "The best talks I have ever heard had no slides at all. The best talks I have ever presented had no slides."--Edited by Roy Tennant, Current Cites, Vol. 15, No. 1, January 2004.

National Leadership Grants for Library and Museum Collaborations Program
February 2004 -- http://www.imls.gov/grants/library/pdf/nlg04app.pdf
From "Priorities" ...
- Projects that help museums and libraries take a leadership role in building community partnerships to support the development of learning communities, or
- Projects that develop, document, evaluate and disseminate model programs of cooperation between libraries and museums, or
- Research projects that enhance interoperability, integration and seamless access to digital library and museum resources, particularly projects that are of state-wide, regional, thematic or national scope, or
- Research projects that develop innovative approaches to the use of broadband technologies for learning. Successful proposals will deliver content via the Internet-2 network and will provide other delivery options for appropriate audiences, or
- Research projects that address knowledge integration, digital preservation, or the integration of physical and digital experiences. A resource that discusses these issues is the "Report of the Workshop on Opportunities for Applied Research on the Creation, Management, Preservation and Use of Digital Content" (see http://www.imls.gov/pubs/pdf/digitalopp.pdf).

Un"furl"-ing Bookmarks
February 2004 -- Furl is a new web browsing tool that lets you save and organize thousands of useful web pages (you know, the ones you want to save for future reference but then can never find again) in a personal "web page filing cabinet".

Once saved, you can find any page again later using a powerful full text search tool. With Furl you can forget trying to save and organize dozens of bookmarks, forget saving web pages to your desktop, in fact forget everything except how to find a useful web page again next time you need it. "

Online Social Dynamics
February 2004 -- "An understanding of the "user-driven" dynamics of music audience subcultures is an invaluable tool in not only forecasting the future of online music consumption patterns, but in understanding other online social dynamics as well. Digital music and subculture: Sharing files, sharing styles."--by Sean Ebare, "Digital Music and Subculture: Sharing Files, Sharing Styles," First Monday, Vol 9, No. 2, February 2, 2004.
